Artifacts
Reflection and Analysis
During this artifact submission I decided to choose two assignments that gave me more insight into the predominant theories that help consultants guide intervention in sport and performance psychology. In these assignments, we were provided case studies where we broke them down into an effective format that will guide the intervention in a positive way. We learned that through a consulting process, the intake is one of the most important steps, and it is the first objective we complete when meeting with a new client. This allows us to understand the unique differences of each individual and not just jump to the conclusion that one size fits all. We gather as much information as we can about the individual so that we can determine the presenting concerns and other factors that may be contributing to the performance challenges the athlete is facing. After thoroughly reviewing the client's situation and presenting concerns we then lean towards the needs analysis, and this is where we will provide assessments and other mental performance tools to truly understand their situation. Once we gather as much information about the individual's performance needs, we then establish what theory is going to help us guide our intervention. This assignment helped me tremendously when linking certain theoretical approaches (such as ACT, CBT, SET, etc.) with different cases. It made me realize that the support an individual needs will be different from their peers, and the theoretical approach will vary depending on the challenges/needs of the athlete. During this assignment I was able to link the theories I found fit with the case that was presented once intake, presenting concerns, and need analysis was completed. This assignment has made me realize that as consultants it is important to never skip the intake process because in return this can lead to guiding the intervention with a theoretical perspective that does not highlight the needs of your client. After completing these assignments, I have been drawn to the theories of SDT, REBT, and ACT which are all unique in their own way. Not only did this assignment bring clarity to the intervention process, but it also helped me see the importance of the predominant theories and trends in sport and performance psychology. Some athletes may struggle with self-belief, some may struggle with nerves under pressure, some may struggle with a bad attitude, some may struggle with performance anxiety, and all these concerns are faced in their own unique way.
Before writing these artifacts, I was blind to the importance of client intake. Every intervention is going to bring its unique setting to the table, which allows for growth and experience. I always thought that once I hear concerns/challenges from an athlete, I will provide solutions for them to address the cause. However, I learned throughout the creation of these artifacts that without thorough intake, you can miss the underlying cause for the performance issue.
To improve upon my original submission of this assignment, I gathered all the feedback from my professor and implemented it into the final submission. I became clearer on what theoretical approach to take with each case, and what specific mental skills/assessments reflected on the theory chosen to guide intervention.
